Josef von Sternberg: The Scarlet Empress

this post is a few days late.

These are film stills I took while viewing director Josef von Sternberg's The Scarlet Empress (1934) for my independent study. The film is a wonderfully elaborate drama about the rise of Catherine the Great of Russia played by Marlene Deitrich. Deitrich plays some of the most interesting women characters of her time. Sternberg loved casting her as a domineering woman who used her sexuality to get what she wanted. I find she has one of the most captivating faces in film history, photographers and directors alike have capitalized on her glamour.
