Lisa Lyon, 1982

Mapplethorpe gets people out of their clothes...then in front of the camera. He was one of the first photographers to explore gay culture with a sense of pride, even if done in a somewhat blunt manner.

He explored the ideas of homosexuality, heterosexuality, transexuality, transgender, and plain old kinkiness in a more direct and forward manner than had ever been seen publicly before. There is an admirable sense of dignity and beauty in his photos despite their sordid content. The point of dignity is up for discussion.
